An operating expense is a cost incurred by a company as a result of its routine business activities. Operating expenditures, often known as OPEX, include rent, equipment, inventory costs, marketing, payroll, insurance, step costs, and cash reserved for research & development, utilities, salaries, office supplies, maintenance and repairs, property taxes, and depreciation.
